It pays to notice subtle changes in how your plumbing works. These symptoms may not prevent you from taking a shower or washing the dishes right now, but they could foreshadow future problems. You can reduce the cost of repairs, prevent damage and avoid water disruptions by taking action if you notice these signs:

  1. Slow Drainage
When a sink basin or bathtub drains very slowly, something could be partially blocking the pipe. This problem often gradually worsens. If no one unclogs the pipe, water may completely stop draining and make it difficult to use the plumbing fixture.
  1. Discoloration
Your water shouldn’t have a color. If it looks black or greenish, a harmful substance might be growing inside of the pipes that could trigger illness. Orange, yellow or brown water suggests that your pipes or water heater need maintenance because they have begun to rust and may eventually leak. Copper and brass fittings can also affect the color.
  1. Drain Odors
A problem with the drain trap or vent may cause one sink to produce an unpleasant smell. When every drain in the house emits a strong odor, it might mean that the sewer line needs repair. Plumbers know how to accurately find the source of these complex problems.
  1. Sputtering
It’s normal for faucets to sputter after long periods of disuse. However, this shouldn’t happen regularly. Frequent sputtering reveals the presence of air in your water pipes and may indicate that cracks have developed.
  1. Low Pressure
Leaky or clogged pipes can decrease the pressure level. You may need a plumber to visit your home right away; a hidden leak could inflict serious damage. Check the walls and ceilings for indications of moisture, such as mold, discoloration or swelling.
  1. Rising Costs
Watch for any sudden increases in your utility bills (look at actual consumption rather than the price). If gas or electric usage soars, your water heater may require service. A mysterious surge in water consumption could mean that you need to fix a leak.
