Which Types of Flooring Work Best with Radiant Heating?

Ceramic, porcelain, and luxury vinyl tile flooring are some of the best options if you want to heat your home with radiant flooring. Natural stone flooring is also ideal. Stone flooring takes longer to heat than tile flooring but also retains heat longer than ceramic, porcelain, and LVT flooring.

Radiant heating can be installed under laminate flooring if you take proper precautions. It can also be installed under hardwood flooring, concrete flooring, and carpeting, but it’s not ideal. Rubber flooring is not compatible with radiant heating.

How to Have Radiant Heating Installed Under Existing Flooring

You don’t have to remove existing flooring to install radiant heating in your home. Hydronic radiant heat can be installed on the underside of your subfloor, as long as the HVAC company doing the work can access this flooring to fasten the pipes in place. The pipes are then connected to your water heater; however, you may need to invest in an additional boiler if your home is larger than 3,000 square feet.

Electric radiant heat is cheaper to install than hydronic radiant heat; however, it’s not as energy-efficient as hydronic heat. It’s also unsuitable for large rooms, as it won’t adequately warm the space. Nonetheless, it can be an ideal option for a small bathroom, bedroom, or closet. Like hydronic radiant heat, it must be installed on the underside of your subfloor if you don’t want to remove your flooring to install the heating mats.
