Is your HVAC system acting strangely? How do you know when to repair or replace it? One of the first signs of distress is that the system is not cooling or heating as it should. There are a few reasons why it may not be performing at its best.

Before you call an HVAC company, start with the filter. When was the last time you checked and changed it? If you’ve ruled out the little things that may be affecting the system and you’re still having trouble, it’s time to call in the professionals. Here are a few things to consider when determining if you need a new HVAC:

  • Utility Bill
Are your utility bills getting higher? If nothing has changed in terms of weather, it may be harder for your unit to work efficiently. Those increasing costs can be an indication of trouble down the road.
  • Age
How old is your unit? Newer models are designed to be more efficient. If your unit is over 10 years old, you may want to have a technician check things out.
  • Noise
If your HVAC unit is making weird noises on a continuous basis, the chances of you needing repairs and/or a new unit is likely. This could also be a result of not having the right-sized unit, which may put a strain on the cooling and heating efforts.
  • Components
If certain components fail, it could cause issues with heating and cooling. For instance, when coils freeze, you may hear the HVAC system attempting to work, but you won’t feel a difference in the output. The compressor is also a huge issue if it fails. Replacing certain parts could actually cost you more than replacing the entire system.

While all these factors may be indicators of needing a new system, it’s important to make sure the existing system was properly installed. If the system wasn’t installed by a professional, your current problems may be a result.
