Your air conditioning filter should be replaced every one to six months, depending on the type of filter you select, how frequently you use your air conditioning unit or HVAC system, and the amount of dirt and dust in the area where you live.
An air conditioning filter helps to trap dirt, dust, pollen, dander and other debris, reducing the amount of these particles floating around in your home from the air conditioning system. As your unit operates, dirt and dust become trapped on the filter. The filter needs to be replaced regularly to ensure your unit works efficiently and is also able to remove unwanted particles from the air. If you have never changed an air conditioning filter, follow these steps to help you get started.
Step 1: Locate the Filter
The first step to replacing the filter is to locate it. The filter will be located where your return air supply duct is. This is typically near the thermostat, most commonly in a grate in the ceiling. Depending on the size of the home, you may have multiple returns and filters of different sizes.
Step 2: Purchase the Correct Sized Filter
If you do not already know what size of filter(s) to buy, you will be able to see the measurements on the existing filter. Do not remove the filter until you are ready to replace it. If you have not already done so, go to a hardware store, big box retailer or even an online retailer to purchase the correct sized filter.
Prior to starting the next step, shut your air conditioning unit off and wipe the grate or vent cover down with a soft cloth to remove excessive dirt or dust.
Step 3: Open the Grate or Vent Cover
Open the grate or vent cover. Most covers are held in place with screws, but some units have other types of fasteners. Once the cover is removed, you will be able to clearly see the filter.
Step 4: Remove and Replace the Filter
Now that you have a replacement filter, you can remove the existing filter and insert the new filter. Look for the arrows on the filter to help you determine how to properly place your filter within the duct.
If you fail to replace your air conditioning filter routinely, you may find that you have more dust in your home or that the air quality in your home is suffering. Failing to replace the filter can also put strain on your air conditioning unit, causing parts to wear out faster and shortening the life of your unit.
