The average person uses up to 100 gallons of water a day and shells out nearly $73 a month for water bills. Thankfully, it’s not hard to reduce water consumption and lower your bills with the right fixtures.

Faucets

Older faucets use up to 2.5 gallons a minute. New faucets, on the other hand, use less than 1.5 gallons a minute. Replacing bathroom and kitchen faucets can help you save a significant amount of water every year.

An alternative to changing faucets is to have an aerator installed on existing faucets. These small, handy devices not only reduce water usage but also give water a light taste and soft feel while reducing splashing in the sink.

Showerheads

While older showerheads use up to 5.5 gallons of water a minute, newer ones use less than half that amount. What’s more, the water pressure remains the same, so you can enjoy your shower to the fullest without using more water than necessary.

Toilets

Toilets made before 1993 can use up to 7 gallons of water per flush. Newer models, on the other hand, use less than 2 gallons of water a flush. Changing an indoor toilet can enable a family of four to save more than 20,000 gallons of water a year.

There are various low-flow toilet options to consider when shopping for a new toilet. Gravity-fed toilets, as the name implies, use gravity to push waste down the bowl. They’re quiet and inexpensive, an ideal option for most homeowners.

Pressure-assisted low-flow toilets, on the other hand, can be a bit noisy. However, they use 45% less water than gravity-fed toilets. Pressure-assisted toilets use air pressure rather than gravity to push waste down the bowl.

Now that you know about the many benefits of low-flow fixtures, it’s time to see which ones are the best fit for your home. While some brand names are arguably better than others, in most cases selecting the right fixtures is a matter of assessing your needs, budget, and current bathroom/kitchen setup.
