The holidays are just around the corner, and that means your house is about to full of family and friends. House guests and large gatherings can put a strain on your home’s plumbing system, with all the additional toilet flushing, hand washing, laundry loads, showers and dish washing.
Now is the time to take care of basic plumbing maintenance and repairs to ensure your system is ready to handle the extra load. Here’s how.
Holiday Plumbing Preparedness Tips
Clean Your Drains
An easy job that you can do yourself is to clean and deodorize your drains. This will help to prevent any untimely clogged drains and unpleasant odors from leaving a bad impression on your guests. A generous amount of boiling water poured down your drains, along with a few cups of vinegar and baking soda, will clean out the sludge and debris and leave your drains smelling clean. Keep some air fresheners available in strategic locations.
Remind Your Guests
Ask your guests to follow some common sense rules when using the bathroom or kitchen sink. Remind them that some things shouldn’t be flushed down the toilet, including hand wipes, paper towels and diapers. Let them know what should and shouldn’t go in the garbage disposal. And make sure you have plenty of toilet paper, flushable wipes, and hand soap available to keep them from using clog-causing alternatives. Consider posting the rules on the bathroom wall.
Check Outdoor Temps
If you expect freezing weather to arrive during your holiday celebrations, you may have to take measures to keep your pipes from freezing. Letting your faucets drip during cold temps and placing space heaters in the crawl space are two alternatives. Having your plumbing contractor install heating tape around your pipes might be the best solution.
Inspection and Repairs
It’s a good idea to have a plumber inspect your system to find any hidden plumbing issues and perform any repairs that you don’t want to do yourself. They can also thoroughly inspect your water heater to make sure it’s functioning properly and will be capable of handling the extra demand.
