Hey, as long as I get warm air in the winter and cool air in the summer, my HVAC system is good to go, right? Celebrate my good fortune and move on to something that really is a problem.

Not so fast! Think about your heating and cooling system like your car. You change the oil regularly. You swap out wiper blades. You have the brakes and tires checked. Maybe that car runs great, but you want to keep it running great. For a lot of reasons. Same goes for your HVAC. .

Why you should have your HVAC serviced regularly

  • Just as with you car, regular maintenance can help avoid breakdowns and costly repairs. Repairs almost always cost more than maintenance. And “costly” doesn’t just mean money; it also means loss of comfort and your time. If your HVAC breaks down in the middle of winter or on the hottest day of summer, your family is going to be miserable, possibly for days if parts have to be ordered.
  • Regular maintenance can extend the life of your HVAC system. Routine checkups include more than just tests to ensure your system is running well. Replacing filters, removing blockages, cleaning evaporator coils and lubricating moving parts will prolong the life of your heating and cooling system.
  • A system that’s running at top performance also will save you on energy costs. That’s because it’s not working as hard to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. An HVAC system that’s not been kept in peak performance due to lack of regular maintenance has to work overtime to achieve the same results. Working overtime costs you money.
  • Suppose you get regular professional maintenance for your heating and cooling system, but something breaks down anyway? Manufacturers often require a system to be well maintained in order for them to pay for repairs and parts through a warranty. So be sure to keep track of routine preventative maintenance, should you ever need to show a manufacturer. (Here at Knight’s Mechanical, we keep records for you.)

  • One big reason to have regular checkups of your HVAC system is that it will help keep temperatures right where you want them throughout your home. A system that’s struggling to keep up with hot or cold outdoor temperatures can’t push air as well to every room. You’ll notice some rooms are comfortable, but others are not.
  • Homeowners certainly can perform some HVAC system maintenance themselves. Checking and replacing the filter, for example, is an easy one — provided you get the right side of the filter going with the air flow! Making sure leaves and other debris are clear of the unit is another. Lubricating internal parts and doing diagnostic checks, on the other hand, are best left to professionals.

At Knight’s Mechanical, our trained and experienced HVAC technicians are happy to inspect your home’s heating and cooling system, then give you an honest appraisal of its condition and what, if anything, needs to be done. We also offer our “Shield” preventative maintenance plan, which gets you system tune-ups in the spring and fall, as well as discounts on parts when repairs are needed.
