It sounds like the start to a prank phone call: Is your air conditioner running? (Well, you should go out and catch it!)
Actually, there is one time when you really do need to listen to what your air conditioner has to say. If you notice strange sounds coming from the unit, it might be time to call in a professional.
Here are a few of the most common AC noises and what they mean.
Banging or Clanging
In most cases, a banging or clanging sound means something is broken and you need to call a repair professional immediately. It can mean a variety of things, but usually this is something inside the unit breaking apart. Turn off your system and get in touch with our service team.
Clicking or Clacking
This one is a little easier to diagnose yourself. A clicking or clacking noise can be one of two things: debris in the condenser or an electrical issue. Turn the unit off and inspect for any loose sticks, twigs, or other debris. If there is nothing, it could be a wiring problem that should be inspected by a professional.
Squealing
A high-pitched squealing noise coming from your air conditioning unit is most certainly a belt that is no longer positioned correctly. Many times, this comes from the rubber material wearing out or expansion and contraction during certain weather conditions. Give us a call for a thorough review before attempting this sort of repair yourself.
Screeching
The screeching noise coming from an air conditioning system is the most startling and usually the most concerning. If you hear this type of noise, turn off your system immediately. It can be an indicator of a pressure buildup problem or a coolant leak. Both can lead to bigger problems if they’re left unfixed, so you’ll want to have a professional examine it before turning it back on.
Other Sounds
Of course, this isn’t a comprehensive list of every possible sound you might hear when your AC system is on the fritz. But it really all comes down to one thing: if you think there’s an issue with your system, give us a call. We’re more than happy to come out to diagnose and repair the issue.
