Summer is coming, and we will want to stay cool and comfortable inside our homes. Now is the time for maintenance and preparedness. Make sure your system is ready for hot days and muggy nights. There are things you, the typical homeowner/consumer can do to ensure proper functioning of your air conditioning unit. Does it need a new part? Can you tinker with the mechanism? What preventive steps can you take to clean and sort it out before a problem strikes. The best defense is a good offense. And we are here to provide a bit of guidance for the intrepid DIY individual. And, of course, if you would prefer to have it looked at by a professional, our team is here for you!
Debris
Seasons of wet leaves, pollen, pollution, dirt, weird stuff your kids threw in there, and other bits can clog up your cooling system. And this is an easy enough fix. You can keep it clean by going outside, donning a pair of heavy-duty gardening gloves, and extracting the gunk yourself. You may have to unscrew and lift off the metal box to reach the fins, which you can then easily vacuum with a soft-bristle brush. An unobstructed cooling system is not only safer, but it will function more efficiently, keeping you cooler and saving you money all summer.
Sinking System
Your outside unit most likely sits on a concrete pad. Over time, and depending on the weather and ground conditions around your home, this concrete slab could begin to sink. If this occurs, there are a few things you can do yourself. If the copper tubes and electrical lines are being strained, or water is pooling around the area, you must fix it. You can use sand and a long wooden board to lift and steady the slab, if you can do so without the concrete cracking.
Duct Booster
Is your dining room a sauna in summer, ruining family dinner and game nights around the table? A skilled layperson can add an in-line duct booster to your air conditioning system that will increase the cool air flow to a particular part of your house. Consider an in-line duct booster fan to increase the flow of lovely air into a room that tends to get stuffy. If you don’t have the time or the necessary tools, work with a reputable company to ensure the job is done right.
Check the Insulation and Replace the Filter
Did you recently move into a home with an older AC unit? Things have changed in the last five years in the materials we use and the way these systems work. If you can swap out the old insulation or replace a filthy filter, you will see much improved results from your cooling mechanism. There are still replacement parts to be found for some, whereas others will need to be overhauled or redone completely. You want your family to be cool and comfortable, safe from the possibility of fires, and saving money during the hottest months of the year.
Knight’s Mechanical has a reputation for reliable air conditioning service. We can repair it; we can replace it.
