Things happen – that’s a given. One of the worst things that can occur is a plumbing emergency (or one you think is an emergency) during the middle of the night or on a major holiday. If you know nothing about plumbing, it’s easy to consider something major, even if it’s not.
How do you know what needs immediate assistance? Here are some of the most common:
- Pipe break
If your pipe breaks and water is running everywhere, call a plumber immediately. This can happen with old pipes, freezing pipes, and other situations that are out of your control. - Water heater leaks
If your water heater is making loud noises or has started leaking, do not wait until morning – call a plumber immediately. - Sewage backup
If your toilet is bubbling or the toilet starts backing up into the shower, the problem is very serious and needs the attention of a plumber. - Overflowing toilets
While a simple clog is usually remedied with a plunger, an overflowing toilet is indicative of a serious underlying issue.
Although these are extreme situations, ask yourself if one of these can wait before you call an emergency plumber. Can you use the plumbing? How long has the issue been going on? If you can’t use your plumbing at all, or the issue is getting worse as time passes, do not wait.
While some plumbing emergencies are unavoidable, there are a few ways to be proactive to avoid some of these occurrences:
- Don’t pour cooking oil down the drain.
- Flush the garbage disposal with water.
- Use drain guards to keep food from clogging the drain.
