HVAC systems that use R22 refrigerant, also known as R22 Freon or HCFC-22 Freon, are already obsolete even if still functioning. As of Jan. 1, 2020, the principal component of Freon refrigerant is no longer produced in or imported by the United States because it contributes to the depletion of the ozone layer.
Consumers should be aware that while it is not necessary to replace your outmoded air conditioning system, it will become more difficult to obtain R22. It is therefore recommended to replace your home cooling system before it breaks down.
Because ozone-depleting substances are no longer tolerated, American consumers need an alternative way to cool their homes and businesses. While a few R22 units may be able to be converted to use a different type of refrigerant, many conversions may only buy the customer a few more years of useful life. Also, most systems will not favor retrofitting, so it’s time to look forward and invest in superior, less-harmful technology.
