Plumbing makes modern life possible by providing running hot and cold water on demand. We take it for granted when we’re thirsty, taking baths, cleaning, and more. It’s all too easy to forget about how it works — until something doesn’t.
Thankfully, there are measures you can take to avoid plumbing problems that can be difficult and/or expensive to fix. Here are some plumbing maintenance tasks you’ll want to take care of this spring to ensure your plumbing continues to work properly.
Check for Leaks
Check all kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room faucets for leaks. If you notice water dripping from a faucet, you may need to fix a bad washer or cartridge, or even replace the entire faucet to remedy the problem. Don’t ignore it, as you could be wasting hundreds of gallons of water every year if the faucets won’t shut off properly.
Check Appliances That Use Water
Check your water heater, refrigerator, and dishwasher to ensure these are in good working order. Water heater pipes should be inspected regularly for leaks, in addition to having a professional do maintenance work on the tank once or twice a year. If your refrigerator has a water dispenser, you’ll need to replace the filter every six months.
Listen to your dishwasher as it’s running. If it takes too long to fill, there may be a problem with the water supply hose. If it takes too long to drain and/or won’t drain properly, check the discharge hose to ensure it’s not clogged or pinched.
Inspect the Home for Signs of Water Damage
Is there a lingering bad smell in the home? Do you have problems with mold growth? Are there dark spots on the walls and/or ceiling of the home? Are your utility bills higher than before, and you don’t know why?
These warning signs indicate you have a leaky pipe in the walls of your home. You’ll want to hire a plumber to find and repair the leaks as soon as possible, as water damage can cause irreparable harm to your home’s foundation and structure.
