One of the most common household plumbing problems you might encounter is a clogged sink drain. However, trying to tackle the problem yourself can cause more harm than good. Here are a few of the most common mistakes to avoid.

Mistake No. 1: Not Plunging

Most people instantly go to drain cleaner or other methods when they first experience a sink drain clog. This is wrong! The best method is to use that good old bathroom plunger before attempting additional options.

Start by draining all standing water out of the sink using a cup or ladle, leaving only enough liquid to cover the top of the plunger. Or, if there was no water to start, add more to reach this level. Start the unclogging process by lifting the handle up an inch or so while maintaining the seal over the drain. A few strokes and you should see some sort of improvement. If not, it might then be time to look at an alternative method.

Mistake No. 2: Using Harsh Drain Cleaners First

Really, the worst thing you can do for a simple sink drain clog is to go straight to harsh chemicals. Instead, try using boiling hot water first. If the issue is something that can melt or dissolve, such as grease or food buildup, this will cause it to dislodge.

Another option is adding a cup of baking soda to the drain and pouring a cup of vinegar over top. Add a rubber stopper over top and allow the mixture to sit for 15 to 20 minutes. The chemical reaction should cause the clog to release and allow water to flow freely. Be sure to rinse out your sink and drain well with water after doing this.
