You wake one morning and find the temperature has skyrocketed in your home. You’re sure the AC is running, but it’s not cooling your home. What’s wrong?

Such a scenario can be quite a nightmare. And unless you figure out the cause, things can get uncomfortable quite fast. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons your AC may stop putting out cold air.

Dirty or Clogged Air Filters

One of the most common reasons your AC is misbehaving is because you have dirty air filters. These filters trap dust, hair, pollen and lint and thus need to be changed regularly.

When ignored, they prevent air from flowing properly into your house and can even cause the unit to shut down. If you haven’t changed the air filters recently, they could be the reason your AC isn’t circulating cold air.

We suggest checking your air filters every 30 days and cleaning or changing them as needed.

Leaking or Low Refrigerant

If your AC isn’t producing cool air, you may have a leaking refrigerant. The refrigerant is a chemical liquid responsible for cooling your home.

Technically, it should never run out or need to be replaced. But when a leak occurs in the refrigerant lines, you won’t have enough to cool your home. That’s the reason your AC is not putting out cold air.

Don’t try fixing refrigerant leaks by yourself. Instead, call an HVAC technician for AC repair to ensure the job is done right.

Faulty Compressor

A compressor is like the heart of your AC unit. It transfers the refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor units. A dirty or clogged condenser can cause inefficiency in the unit, reducing the cool air in your home. A faulty compressor needs replacing, and you need to have a technician check it out.

Thermostat Not Working Correctly

Most of the time, the thermostat is the reason behind a misbehaving AC unit. If it’s in the “auto” setting, your AC won’t turn on until your home’s temperature reaches a certain level.
